07th Jul 2010Waxing Lyrical: Contemporary Lusophone Poets
Portugal sits on the edge of the Atlantic and was one of the first European nations to explore and colonise the four corners of the world. This period of exploration was memorably recounted by Luís de Camões in his epic poem, The Lusíads. The legacy of this expansion are vast communities of Lusophone, or Portuguese-speaking, people all over the world, from Brazil and Cape Verde in the Atlantic, to Guinea-Bissau, Angola and Mozambique in Africa, to Goa, Macau and East Timor in South East Asia. These millions of peoples have rich and diverse cultural traditions, well represented by some of the finest poets in the world writing in any language.

30th Jun 2010Waxing Lyrical: The Poetry of Bees
Bees have long been recognised as some of the most remarkable creatures on the planet, whose flight, navigation, communication and social organisation provide us with challenges to our anthropocentric views. With their production of honey and wax, bees have contributed enormously to human development, and have provided a rich source of metaphors and symbols. Especially for this year’s City of London Festival, and with the generous support of Gresham College, Poet in the City commissioned five of the UK’s leading poets to write original poems about bees.
