2008 events

Rumi

An event held in January 2008 celebrating the life and works of the great Persian poet Mavlana Jalaladdin Muhammad Rumi
It featured Lobat Vala who read some of Rumi's work in Farsi and Robert Maxwell who has translated Rumi's work.

Due to popular demand, this event was repeated in March 2008

Poetry in the Built Environment

In February 2008, Poet in the City launched their Poetry in the Built Environment initiative which also provided inspiration of the innovative use of poetry as part of the re-development of Kings Cross.

Speakers included Aidan Andrew Dun, whose work celebrates the many poetic connections of the King's Cross area; Sue Hubbard, poet and art critic; Angus Tilbury of FW Design Limited, a leading sign and mapping company responsible for many urban realm projects; and Gordon Young, a sculptor and public realm artist .

The Meat of the Tongue: Disfigurement

Held in March, Disfigurement was the first of three events focusing on poetry about the human body, its rhythms, desires, senses and dysfunctions by contemporary poets.

In March the series focused on Disfigurement. The poets featured at this event were Roddy Lumsden, Aofie Mannix, and Luke Kennard.

The Meat of the Tongue: The Eye

Held in April, The Eye, was the second of three events focusing on poetry about the human body, its rhythms, desires, senses and dysfunctions by contemporary poets.

The poets featured at this event were Don Paterson, Tobias Hill and Caroline Bird

John Kinsella

In April, Poet in the City held an event featuring the acclaimed Australian Poet reading a selection of his own work

Contemporary Spanish Poets - Lois Alberto de Cuenca

Poet in the City collaborated with the Institute of Cervantes on an exciting series of poetry events featuring six Contemporary Spanish Poets which took place between April and November.

Stigma

An event using poetry to explore and challenge the stigma associated with mental illness
The event was chaired by Baroness Julia Neuberger, a Liberal Democrat peer who speaks on health matters in the House of Lords.
Performing at the event were Lisa Appignanesi, Blake Morrison, John Hegley and Selima Hill.

The Meat of the Tongue: The Body

In May The Meat of the Tongue series concluded with an event about the body.

The poets featured at this event were Penelope Shuttle, Tishani Doshi and Joanne Limburg.

Spoken Word

A New Audiences event featuring some of the UK's most exciting poets and spoken word artists in association with Apples & Snakes

The artists who appeared at the event were AF Harrold, Jenny Lindsay, Abraham Gibson and Stacy Makishi

Urban Myths

In June and July, Poet in the City put on a series of four events called Urban Myths bringing together an eclectic range of contemporary poets, including poetry legends, award-winning published poets and some of the UK's most exciting new voices

Urban Myths: Countries of the Body

Countries of the Body featured Tishani Doshi, Siddhartha Bose and Carole Satyamurti.

Urban Myths: Poetry and Jazz

Poetry and Jazz featured Michael Horovitz, John Mole and Inua Ellams

Urban Myths: Poetry and Comedy

Poetry and Comedy featured Nathan Penlington, Ross Sutherland and Simon Munnery
