In this annual Poet in the City event, Carol Ann Duffy read from her own poetry and also presented three leading contemporary poets whose work she particularly admires. This year, in an unmissable combination, Carol Ann was joined by the two other national laureate poets, Gillian Clarke (Wales) and Liz Lochhead (Scotland). The event also featured acclaimed poet Imtiaz Dharker and brilliant musical interludes from John Sampson.

Since becoming Poet Laureate in 2009, Carol Ann Duffy has made the role her own, producing inventive topical poems about everything from snow and football to the banking crisis and the war in Afghanistan. Her work reaches for powerful truths across fantasy and reality, personal emotions and public controversies, with eloquence and a subversive sense of humour.

Carol Ann was born in Glasgow, grew up in Stafford, and is now based in Manchester. She had her first poems published at the age of 15 and has since published six collections of poems for adults, winning numerous awards including the Forward Poetry Prize, the Whitbread Award and the T.S. Eliot Prize.

Gillian Clarke is an influential poet, playwright, editor, creative writing tutor and translator, whose work is often studied at GCSE and A level. The Cardiff-born writer became the National Poet of Wales in 2008 and was awarded the Queens Gold Medal for poetry in 2010.

Liz Lochhead was a lecturer in fine art before becoming a successful poet and dramatist. In January 2011 she was named as the second Scots Makar, or national poet. Her work often explores issues of power and humanity through classic figures such as Frankenstein and Mary Queen of Scots.

Imtiaz Dharker calls herself a Scottish Muslim Calvinist, and these diverse influences create the tensions that characterise her work as a documentary filmmaker, artist and poet. She has published five acclaimed collections of poetry, all self-illustrated.

John Sampson is an Edinburgh-based professional musician, composer and actor. His work encompasses comedy, cabaret, classical and jazz, and has collaborated extensively in music and poetry performances with Carol Ann Duffy
