Poet in the City and Archives for London have commissioned new poetry from seven leading UK poets to uncover the stories of London’s archives. This is the first in a series of events as part of Through the Door, which will showcase this new poetry for the first time and explore the inspiration it has taken from the fascinating material in the archives.

Poet Simon Jenner worked with documents from The Refuge for the Destitute, a Victorian women’s refuge in Hackney. Journeying through these records of human experience he was inspired to bring some of the women back to life, giving a new poetic vision to the few remaining details of their lives. The result was In Asyla.

Simon will be reading his poetry, and speaking about the journey of discovery at the Hackney Archives. He will be joined in conversation by Elizabeth Green, Hackney Archives Outreach Officer.
