Poetry & Lyrics 2017: Don Paterson & P J Harvey

Fri
09th June 2017 19:30
Hall One, Kings Place
90 York Way, London, N1 9AG
A unique celebration of poetry and lyrics with two of the country’s most iconic wordsmiths, Don Paterson and PJ Harvey. Long-time admirers of each other’s work, Harvey’s poetry focuses on themes of home, displacement, conflict and uprising, with Paterson’s centring on love, loss, and resilience. Join us as we bring them together for the first time on stage, for an evening of poetry readings and conversation hosted by BBC arts commentator John Wilson.

PJ Harvey has released nine critically acclaimed albums, been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, and is the only artist to have been awarded the UK’s prestigious Mercury Prize twice (Stories from the City, Stories From The Sea and Let England Shake). Her current album, The Hope Six Demolition Project, reached #1 in the UK Album Charts. Harvey’s first collection of poetry, The Hollow of the Hand, in collaboration with photographer Seamus Murphy was published by Bloomsbury (2015). She is currently working on poems for a new collection.

Don Paterson is the author of several award-winning poetry collections including Rain (Forward Prize 2009) and 40 Sonnets (Costa Poetry Award 2015). He has been awarded T.S. Eliot Prize on two occasions. He received the OBE in 2008 and the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2010, and is the poetry editor for Pan MacMillan. In addition, he is a keen jazz musician and composer, describing the two disciplines as being ‘mapped to each other’ and enjoying the ‘double-sided signs’ that poetry creates. He plays in The Don Paterson Situation.

John Wilson is a sought-after broadcaster, journalist and arts pundit. Since hanging up his bass guitar, he has become a regular presenter on Radio 4’s Front Row, specialising in music related interviews, with guests including Morrissey, David Bowie and Kate Bush and is a firm favourite with Britain’s artistic icons. He also presents Meeting Myself Coming Back and the obituary programme Last Word.

This event is part of our Poetry & Lyrics festival at Kings Place on 9-10th June.

The event will be preceded by a live performance from Kristen McClement drawing on the evening’s themes on the foyer stage and followed by a musical appearance from Don Paterson in Hall Two

This is a non-musical performance.
