Poetry & Lyrics 2017: Vices and Verses
10th June 2017 20:00
90 York Way, London, N1 9AG
United by a love of poetry, from Katie’s penchant for T.S. Eliot and Anne Carson, to Don’s determination to create poetic lyrics that "never waste a syllable", these two musical icons will be celebrating the words that have meant the most to them across their careers, illustrated through discussion and performance of music and poetry. The event will be hosted by raconteur provocateur extraordinaire Murray Lachlan Young, whose 6Music show Lyrics By has interrogated the role of lyrics in music, and whose own poetry has been equally influenced by the likes of Edward Lear and Tom Waits.
The night will also be a unique opportunity to mark two strong friendships. While Murray and Don are long time admirers of each others work, Katie and Don have collaborated on many of her hits, including her most recent studio album In Winter; she describes him as ‘a master of lyric writing’.
Don’t miss this festival finale.
Murray Lachlan Young’s poetry career began in the underground poetry/cabaret nights of mid-nineties London. Word of his unique style of writing and performing soon spread, and he was signed by EMI in a recording deal that saw him dubbed, for a while, the ‘Million Pound Poet’. He has appeared regularly on BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live, Radio 5 Live and Test Match Special. Since 2011 Murray has been resident poet at BBC Radio 6 Music, and has collaborated with artists including Morcheeba. Murray joins us to host the night and perform his poetry.
Don Black is a celebrated lyricist. Winning an Oscar, two Tony Awards and six Ivor Novello Awards, his catalogue includes Born Free, Diamonds Are Forever, and Michael Jackson’s Ben. Don will be looking back across his career, sharing his insights into brilliant song writing, and celebrating other examples and poetry he loves.
Katie Melua is known as a singer, songwriter and guitarist who has achieved immense global success since signing a record deal, aged 18. Her first two albums Call off the search and Piece by Piece both achieved international No 1 status. In Winter, is Katie’s 7th studio album featuring the voices of the 24 piece Gori Women’s choir, who like Katie hail from Georgia. The album broke into the uk top 10 album chart, making it Katie’s 7th consecutive top 10 studio album. Katie will be the sharing poems that have inspired her songwriting and performing music.
