Poet in the City was delighted to present an evening of Rainer Maria Rilke’s verse in both German and English celebrating an exciting new translation of his Sonnets to Orpheus by Martyn Crucefix.

The book is ideal for readers new to Rilke’s extraordinary work as well as devotees ready to welcome these vigorous, powerful new translations.

Martyn Crucefix has won numerous prizes for his own poetry including a major Eric Gregory award and a Hawthornden Fellowship. His collections include Beneath Tremendous Rain (1990), At The Mountjoy Hotel (1993), On Whistler Mountain (1994), A Madder Ghost (1997), An English Nazareth (2004) and Hurt (2012).

His edition of Rilke’s Duino Elegies (2006) was shortlisted for the Corneliu Popescu Prize and chosen by the novelist Philip Pullman as one of his 40 favourite books.
