What story do you want to tell about Newcastle?

Poet in the City and Newcastle City Library invite you to the launch of Poet in the City Producers, a training programme for young producers to develop key industry and transferable skills in creative producing through a programme of workshops, leadership training, networking opportunities and professional practice.

Poet in the City Producers will produce new work inspired by local feminist stories as part of the national Herstory programme in collaboration with the British Library, and develop young peoples' professional skills to become the next generation of poetry producers. This is an opportunity to shape a new youth culture offer in Newcastle, and to play a role in finding new producing talent to shape the future of poetry in the city.

To kick things off, we’re bringing together young people from Newcastle to ask the question: ‘What story do you want to tell about your city?’ Join us at a digital Roundtable on Thursday 30th September at 5pm for a lively and open discussion between young people who care about the arts in Newcastle.

We’ll explore what’s happening in Newcastle and what’s missing from the scene. Together we’ll map our city and ensure everyone’s voice is heard, what do you want to create in your city?

Who can attend?

We’re inviting young leaders, creatives, and arts professionals based in Newcastle to contribute to the discussion. (No upper age limit, anyone with a stake in the creative scene in the North East can attend.)

Special guest poet Kirsten Luckins will be joining us to take poetic minutes of the session. Kirsten is a poet, performer, and creative producer from Teesside. She wears many freelance hats; as director of the Tees Women Poets collective, as Co-ordinator for Crossing the Tees Book Festival, and as Project Manager for the Rebecca Swift Foundation managing the national #WomenPoetsPrize and #WomenPoetsNetwork. Her third poetry collection, Passerine (Bad Betty Press 2021), has recently been longlisted for the Laurel Prize for new nature writing.
